Avenue Q: An ISCWR Production
The Imperial Sovereign Court of the Wild Rose (ISCWR) is known for their amazing group work and drag production shows. In the past year alone, they have put together shows such as Little Shop of Horrors, the Rocky Horror Picture Show, and GLEEK, the Production. This May, they are presenting the spring show: Avenue Q!
For those of you not familiar with the plot of this show, think Sesame Street meets Rent; it's relationships in New York's Alphabet City, and in the stage version, it's mostly puppets. The ISCWR has converted those puppets to drag queens, and voila! This IS a drag show, so it IS lip sync'ed, but to tie the songs together, they have added a new twist to their normal repertoire, with a live narrator delivering jokes and sequeways between songs.
The show focuses primarily on the relationship between Princeton, recent college graduate, and Kate Monster, kindergarten teacher with dreams of creating a School for Monsters. Running alongside this story is the subplot of Rod and Nicky, two roommates and friends dealing with Rod's inability to come out as gay. These four interact with the other residents of the apartment tenement on Avenue Q: Jewish comedian Brian and his fiancee, the Japanese Christmas Eve, porn-addict Trekkie Monster, sex-crazy Lucy the Slut, and the building super, TV's Gary Coleman.
With a cast of some of your favorite performers, this show delivers laugh after laugh. We warn you though, it can be VERY politically incorrect, so be prepared for some very adult situations. Underneath the laughs though, there are lessons: about pornography, racism, taking pleasure in the misfortune of others, and about how all of life's troubles are only for now.
Enjoy this show. It's fun and the money is for charity; this years ISCWR charities are related to our community's GLBT youth. It's running Friday May 11 and Saturday May 12 at the Junction, and if you like it there, you can see it in June at La Cite Francophone.
