The Big Gay Musical
Whats better than a small straight play? A big, gay musical!
And directors Casper Andreas and Fred Caruso deliver in this colorful, comic, and sexy romp.
Daniel Robinson and Joey Dudding star as Paul and Eddie (starring in the musical within the musical as Adam and Steve, just the way God made 'em). While Adam and Steven act out their drama on the stage, Paul and Eddie both go through their own crises: coming out, relationships, bottoming for bottoms, rumors about HIV status, crises of faith, and questing for love.
Backed up by an amazing ensemble (including the hilarious Steve Hayes (“Trick”) and the incredible Liz McCartney), Paul and Eddie live their big gay lives in the big gay city. The direction is simple and beautiful, you can tell these are directors who appreciate the male form (and as a connoisseur of the male form, they sure picked some good ones!) The songs are at times funny, at times hauntingly romantic, and there truly isn't any better way to say I love you than in a song.
It's filled with simple lessons for our own gay lives. “Do unto others as you would have done to you” becomes a great motto for versatility. You realize how hard it is to be a slut. Further, if Daniel Robinson wants to cuddle, you say yes. And if Brent Corrigan is in your bed, you plow him.
Some lessons are a bit more serious though. About judging others. About fate. About acceptance, about honesty. And about knowing that we are all the way God made us, and that we are all part of his beautiful, mysterious, and wonderful plan.
How many of us have had struggles balancing our faith and our sexuality? How many of us have had to deal with venomous hatred spewed in the name of a loving God? This movie might seem a bit blasphemous at times, but its message is clear and close to the greater truth, I think. The ending never fails to make me tear up.
Warning though, you will get showtunes stuck in your head. Luckily though, in spite of what Eve says, singing showtunes won't send you to hell.
This has been a bobert review.
